How to Choose the Right Chameleon Cage?

Choosing the perfect cage for your chameleon can be tricky. So here I’ve listed down some things that you should check before choose a Chameleon Cage:

Size

Size is very important for chameleon cages. For any other reptiles, enclosure of any size does the job. But chameleons are arboreal which means they are tree dwellers. So, their cage must be taller rather than wider. In a tall cage, you can decorate with various plants and branches. If the cage lacks height, the decoration is impossible.

There are various measurements for chameleons of different ages. The standard is 16x16x30 inches at least.  This size is adequate for baby and female chameleons. For adult males, the recommended dimensions are 2x2x4 feet.

Ventilation

Chameleons always require fresh air for their respiratory health. If the enclosure lacks fresh air, fungus and awful odors might accumulate. This will result in respiratory tract infections, mostly in the upper respiratory tract. So, ventilation is one of the most, if not the most important aspects of a chameleon’s cage.

Make sure the cage has meshy screens on at least 3 sides. The top also has to be screened. If the top is blocked with glass or plastic, it will hinder daylight entry into the cage. Plus, with a screened top, misting becomes a lot easier. You won’t have to open the big door and stress your chameleon.

Material

Chameleon cages are mostly built from metals. It’s a big investment, so you wouldn’t want your cage to be damaged easily.

So, make sure you are getting top-quality metal. Look for clear-coated aluminum. This will ensure the cage doesn’t catch rust easily and suffer corrosion. If the cage isn’t hardy enough, it might be damaged during shipping.

Drainage

Humidity and hydration are vital for chameleon’s health. You will be misting the interior frequently and will also give additional water to drink. If the drainage system is faulty, water accumulation will promote various disease conditions. So, make sure the cage comes with a drainage tray.

The entire cage sits on top of the drainage tray. This is the easiest way to recognize it. It includes intricate channels of pipes and tubes to drain the excess water to a designated place. Many confuse drainage tray with substrate tray. Let me make it crystal-clear: the substrate tray sits inside the cage while the drainage tray is placed outside, directly below the cage.

Substrate Tray Access

It’s nothing new that substrates are redundant for chameleons. Using them can do more harm than good to the creatures. In the substrate tray, we usually use materials that have good water-absorbing properties. Using these types of materials helps to keep the interior dry.

So, these materials need to be changed frequently and the floors have to be cleaned thoroughly. To do this job properly, the substrate tray must be easily accessible. Many cages have two separate doors and one of them is used to bring the substrate tray in and out. Look for these types of cages. If any cage doesn’t have this option, bounce quickly.

Conclusion

Choosing a proper cage is very important for your chameleon’s health and happiness as they are very tenuous. The cages that are mentioned in this article are based on my research and personal experience of working with chameleons. And, each one of them checks all the criteria of an ideal chameleon cage.

So, choosing any one from this list of best chameleon cages will work fine for you. However, before choosing one, please consider the factors that I’ve mentioned above as not all cages are suitable for all types of chameleons.

Please let us know in the comment section below what you think about the cages mentioned in this article. Have you ever used any of these? If so, how would you rate them? Share your thoughts in the comments.
