Are Leopard Geckos Friendly?

Lizards are notorious for their anti-social behavior. Unlike common pets like cats, dogs and birds, most lizards don’t really get along with people or even others of their own species.

Lizards, by and large, are solitary creatures who only meet other lizards for mating or fighting for mates. But what about leopard geckos? Are leopard geckos friendly?

Well, compared to most species of lizards, leopard geckos are pretty friendly. It doesn’t mean that they like being held. It’s just that they are better at tolerating handling than most other lizards.

How Friendly Are Leopard Geckos?

On a scale of 1 to 10 I’d give leopard geckos a solid 7. They are generally calm and are rarely defensive from my experience.

But that doesn’t mean they never lash out. They do. Mostly, newborn leopard geckos tend to be a bit frisky from time to time. But all you’ll have to deal with is a bit of scratching. They rarely bite. And even if they do, it’s more of a pinch. So, there’s no way for you to get hurt.

I did encounter adult leopard geckos being hostile. It’s pretty rare and most of the time it’s the handler’s fault. Adult male leopard geckos can get a bit violent during mating season. So, keep that in mind the next time you reach for your gecko.

Can Leopard Geckos Hurt You?

In short, no. If they ever freak out, the most they’ll do is scratch you with their tiny nails. But they are so tiny that you’ll barely even feel them.

Small newborn leopard geckos do bite. But you won’t really feel much pain. All you’ll feel is a little pinch. Adult leopard geckos almost never bite. But when they do, it can be a little painful. But nothing too serious. Bleeding is very unlikely.

Making Leopard Geckos Friendly

The best way to make a leopard gecko friendly towards you is by letting it get accustomed to your presence. You can’t really tame a leopard gecko like cats and dogs. What you can do is teach them to tolerate you.

So, how do you do this? Well, every day take a few minutes of your time and spend it with your leopard gecko. Try gently holding it and interacting with it. Slowly the gecko will get used to being handled.
